Prairies: Southern Alberta
Welcome to the premier edition of the Backroad Mapbook for Southern Alberta! Some of this book may seem familiar. That’s because it is really an extension of our old Southwestern Alberta book, which covered points west of Calgary to the Rocky Mountains. We have revised and updated all that information, and added in a broad area east of Calgary running all the way to the Saskatchewan boundary.
Southern Alberta is an area of dramatic contrast–where sweeping prairies butt against towering mountain peaks, and the temperature can vary 80 degrees Celsius between summer and winter. Here is mile upon rolling mile of unbroken farmland backed by one of the most dramatic mountainscapes in the world, and here are near desert conditions, through which flow some of Canada’s largest rivers. Where rolling fields of yellow canola seem to stretch to meet the deep blue sky.
